Our Approach

How we think and how we work.

Our manifesto.

Clutch is a next-generation pre-seed and seed fund supporting new companies at their earliest stages. We work with first-time CEOs and serial industry operators, native Texans and regional builders, but most importantly, the best damn founders in the country. Here’s how we think and operate.

We are first check investors. And we don’t need anyone else to say yes before we do.

Sometimes it feels like the “venture” has gone out of venture capital. Capital has moved later stage and into mega-funds, chasing the “sure thing” but forgetting that the sure thing rarely starts that way. We’re reminded of the age-old complaint about big banks: they won’t give you a loan until you no longer need it. Having spent our careers across the full arc of venture, we moved back to the earliest stages on purpose.

We like to meet companies super early—before you have a product, and sometimes before you even have a formal company. We write first checks from $250K–$2M, spanning pre-idea through seed. We do our own work, form our own conviction, and don’t wait around for anyone else’s permission. Safety in numbers makes it hard to separate from the pack, and we’d rather separate. When leading the round is what it takes to get you funded, we lead it and bring in our friends at other seed funds to round out the syndicate.

What We Back: Domain Experts Working to Improve the Real Economy

We are at the beginning of a supercycle in AI and automation, but the revolution isn’t just happening in Silicon Valley or Wall Street—it’s happening in the middle of the country, with the businesses that make and shape our economy.

As underlying models become commodity infrastructure, durable companies are built in the application layer, serving real-world operating businesses. We back software, AI, and physical tech for the industries that actually run the world. Writing code got cheap; knowing the work did not. That is why the founder we back most often is a domain expert—someone with twenty years of deep industry experience who finally has the tools to build the thing that they’ve been obsessing about.

Whether you’re building vertical AI for traditional industry, hardware, defense, or the physical machines the real economy depends on, if you know the work, we want to hear from you.

How We Work Alongside You

All startups have ups and downs, and across more than 50 years combined, we’ve invested through the global financial crisis, COVID, and the AI boom. The calm you want in the room on the bad days—and the joy on the good days—comes from having sat in that chair many times before. We add the most value when we work alongside you shoulder-to-shoulder as trusted advisors. Specifically, we focus our energy on three key areas:

  • Talent & Team: People are the #1 success factor in startups. We have the deepest early-stage talent network in our region, and we’ll help you make the right hires at the right time while building an enduring culture.
  • Early Traction: We help you secure your first design partners and close early commercial deals, often starting during our initial diligence. We’ll even ride shotgun on a sales call or a conference.
  • The Next Round: We leverage decades of co-investor and follow-on relationships to set your next raise up properly and minimize your execution risk.

None of this works unless our interests are aligned. We built our fund to win when you win—not to force you into taking reckless bets in search of a trillion dollar outcome. We love the rockets, but we don’t need a miracle to build a great business together.

Some Other Important Things to Know

No surprises. We are meticulous communicators who will always make sure you know exactly where we stand, and we expect the same in return.

We need you to be open to coaching and collaboration. The company is yours to build. We understand that a naive or needlessly meddlesome investor is every entrepreneur’s worst nightmare; we’re here to help, and we will stay out of your way while you execute.

We have a dead serious no-asshole rule. We will not step around or over it. The era of the brilliant jerk is definitively over. We’ve worked hard to get where we are today, and we’re not interested in spending time with people on a journey for the wrong reasons.

Built in Austin, committed to overlooked regions. Texas is home and represents the majority of our investments, but we actively back founders across overlooked markets because great companies don’t only start where traditional capital is looking.
